INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PARLIAMENTARISM
10:30 AM
30th June 2023
Parliament House, Ghana
The International Day of Parliamentarism, observed annually on June 30, marks the founding of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and highlights the critical role of parliaments in democracy, governance, and development. As Ghana navigates a period of political transition with a new government and a focus on resetting national priorities, this year’s observance provides a unique opportunity to reflect on the role of parliament in strengthening democracy, ensuring accountability, and promoting inclusive governance.
Ghana’s democracy has been widely recognized as one of the most stable in Africa, but recent political and economic challenges, including growing public expectations for transparency, youth engagement in governance, and economic recovery, underscore the need for a more responsive and dynamic parliamentary system. The African Business Centre for Developing Education (ABCDE) seeks to leverage this year’s International Day of Parliamentarism to foster dialogue on the evolving role of Ghana’s parliament in shaping national development and deepening democratic governance.
