ABCDE INAUGURATES ABCDE CLUB AT ACCRA WESLEY GIRLS SHS

The African Business Centre for Developing Education (ABCDE) on Tuesday, 26th November 2019, held a major mentorship program for students of the Accra Wesley Girls Senior High School. The event also witnessed the launch of the Accra Wesley Girls SHS ABCDE Club. Held under the theme; “The importance of saving towards a financially secured future”, the program was attended by over 600 students at the Methodist Chapel, located within the school’s premises.

Mentors for the day were seasoned financial experts including Mr. Daniel Gyapanin of Tobinco Group and Mr. Johnson Agyei of Ecobank Ghana. Speaking on the subject, Mr. Johnson Agyei encouraged the students to cultivate the habit of savings in order to make it a habit they carry along throughout adult life. He underscored the fact that most temporary pleasure that young people spend money on are not of real value, hence the need to save a portion of any little amount they receive against rainy days. He said, “The future is full of uncertainties. You never know which unexpected and emergency expenditure will come next knocking at your door. An accident or a sudden hospitalization of any family member, a job loss. That’s where the importance of saving money comes in. If you are prepared beforehand, it will be much less stressful in terms of financial condition”. He further the students to develop responsible spending habits now as it would be more difficult to save high amounts if one did not learn to manage little resources available.

Mr. Daniel Gyapanin took the students through some principles of effective saving and indicated that saving is most effective when people are able to first, take care of their primary needs. Taking his presentation further, he introduced the students to the concept of investment, touching on some key differences between savings and investments. He indicated that the main essence of savings is to ensure financial security. “Financial security refers to the peace of mind you feel when you are not worried about your income is enough to cover your expenses. It also means that you have enough money saved to cover emergencies and your future financial goals”, he said.

Bringing the event to a close, the National Coordinator of ABCDE, Mr. Clifford Tetteh swore into office, the newly appointed executives of the Accra Wesley Girls SHS ABCDE Club. He charged them to be diligent in their work and to take full advantage of the benefits of being members of the club. He further encouraged all students to join the ABCDE mentorship club in order to have regular access to resource persons who would be visiting the campus regularly on ABCDE mentorship duties.
